Part 1 — Camera & Recording Settings for the Best FPV Footage

The DJI O4 Air Unit Pro is capable of producing remarkably polished footage directly from an FPV drone. But simply selecting 4K/120 and pressing record doesn't guarantee the best result.

The right settings depend on what you're trying to capture.

A cinematic mountain flight needs a different setup from aggressive freestyle. A sunset flight needs different exposure choices from bright midday flying. And if you're using Gyroflow, your stabilization settings should be completely different from a pilot who wants footage ready to upload immediately.

So this guide takes a practical approach:

Set the O4 Pro once for your type of flying—and know when to change it.

DJI's current specifications confirm that O4 Pro supports a 1/1.3-inch sensor, 4K/120 recording, 10-bit D-Log M, up to 130 Mbps, ISO 100–25,600 and three FOV options.

This is not an official DJI "best settings" preset. It is our editorial starting point for cinematic FPV, based on the O4 Pro's capabilities and conventional motion-capture principles. DJI confirms the underlying recording modes, bitrate, FOV options and stabilization capabilities. 


1. Start With 4K

For serious footage:

Use 4K.

O4 Pro supports:

4K 4:3

30/48/50/60 fps

4K 16:9

30/48/50/60/100/120 fps. 

For most cinematic FPV:

4K/60 is the sweet spot.

Why?

Because 60 fps gives you:

  • Smooth motion

  • Excellent detail

  • Slow-motion flexibility

  • More manageable storage

  • Better low-light performance than 120 fps


2. When Should You Use 4K/120?

Use:

4K/120

when you specifically want slow motion.

For example:

  • Fast freestyle maneuvers

  • Car tracking

  • Water splashes

  • Close proximity passes

  • High-speed dives

  • Dramatic cinematic transitions

At 120 fps, a 30 fps timeline gives you 4× slow motion.

At a 60 fps timeline, you get 2× slow motion.


3. Don't Use 4K/120 for Everything

This is one of the most common mistakes.

Higher frame rate isn't automatically better.

At 120 fps, you need substantially more light or a faster exposure.

That can force:

higher ISO

which introduces:

more noise.

For sunset and low-light flying:

4K/60 is usually the smarter choice.


4. 4K/30

30 fps has a legitimate use.

Use it for:

low-light cinematic flights

when you don't need slow motion.

The longer available exposure time can help keep ISO lower.

But there is a trade-off:

less motion fluidity.

For aggressive FPV, we'd generally prefer 60 fps.


5. 4:3 vs 16:9

This is an important choice.

O4 Pro supports both:

4K 4:3

and:

4K 16:9. 

For FPV:

4:3 is our preferred capture format when reframing flexibility matters.

You can crop a 4:3 image into:

16:9

later.

You have more vertical information to work with.


6. When 16:9 Makes More Sense

Choose:

16:9

when you already know the final delivery format.

For example:

  • YouTube cinematic

  • Television

  • Widescreen commercial

  • Direct social-media export

If you know exactly how the footage will be used, there's less reason to preserve extra vertical information.


7. D-Log M or Normal?

This is one of the biggest decisions.

Choose:

D-Log M

if you're going to edit and grade the footage.

Choose:

Normal

if you want footage that looks good immediately.

O4 Pro officially supports both Normal and D-Log M. 


8. Why We Recommend D-Log M for Cinematic Work

D-Log M gives you a flatter image designed for greater flexibility in post-production.

That means you can make more deliberate adjustments to:

  • Contrast

  • Highlights

  • Shadows

  • Saturation

  • Color

  • Overall look

DJI also provides an official O4 Air Unit Series D-Log M to Rec.709 LUT through its download center. 

For professional work:

D-Log M is the obvious choice.


9. When Normal Mode Is Better

Don't use D-Log M just because it sounds professional.

If your workflow is:

Fly → download → upload

then:

Normal Mode

may be better.

You don't need to grade every flight.

For:

  • Quick social content

  • Training flights

  • Test footage

  • Casual freestyle

  • Short clips

Normal is simpler.


10. The Shutter-Speed Rule

For cinematic motion:

Start with the 180-degree shutter rule.

That means approximately:

30 fps → 1/60

50 fps → 1/100

60 fps → 1/120

100 fps → 1/200

120 fps → 1/240

These aren't mandatory values.

They're a starting point for natural-looking motion blur.


11. Why Shutter Matters So Much on FPV

FPV drones move extremely quickly.

If the shutter is too fast:

1/500

1/1000

the footage can look unnaturally sharp and staccato.

Every propeller movement and rapid direction change becomes extremely crisp.

That can make cinematic footage feel:

too digital.


12. Why You Shouldn't Always Let Auto Shutter Decide

Auto exposure is convenient.

But if shutter changes constantly during a flight, motion blur changes with it.

You may go from:

smooth cinematic movement

to:

harsh, hyper-sharp motion

within seconds.

For professional footage:

Lock the shutter whenever practical.


13. Our Recommended Shutter Settings

Cinematic 30 fps

1/60

Cinematic 50 fps

1/100

Cinematic 60 fps

1/120

Slow motion 100 fps

1/200

Slow motion 120 fps

1/240

Then use:

ND filters

to control exposure.


14. ND Filters

The O4 Pro is compatible with the same ND filters as DJI Avata 2, according to DJI. 

That's useful because you can control incoming light while maintaining your chosen shutter speed.

For example:

Bright sunlight

Use:

ND16 / ND32

depending on conditions.

Moderate sunlight

Use:

ND8 / ND16

Overcast

Often:

ND8 or no ND

depending on exposure.

These are starting points—not fixed rules.


15. Don't Force an ND Filter

This is another common mistake.

If you're flying at:

sunset

and already struggling for light,

don't keep an ND filter mounted just because:

"Cinematic footage needs ND."

No.

The purpose of the ND filter is to control exposure.

If light is scarce:

remove it.


16. ISO

DJI gives the O4 Pro an extremely broad ISO range:

Auto:

100–25,600

Manual:

100–25,600

But that doesn't mean:

ISO 25,600 is a good idea.

Maximum ISO is a technical capability, not a recommended shooting value.


17. Daylight ISO

For bright outdoor flying:

ISO 100

is our preferred starting point.

It gives you the cleanest image and maximum exposure control.

If you're using an ND filter:

keep ISO at 100

and adjust the filter strength to maintain your desired shutter.


18. Cloudy Conditions

For overcast weather:

ISO 100–400

is a useful working range.

Try to stay as low as practical.


19. Golden Hour

Golden hour is different.

As the sun drops:

ISO 100

may no longer be sufficient.

A practical starting point is:

ISO 100–800.

The exact value depends heavily on the scene.


20. Low Light

At dusk, you may need:

ISO 800–1600+

depending on your frame rate and shutter.

Noise will increase.

But an underexposed image that gets heavily lifted in post can look worse than a properly exposed image recorded at a higher ISO.

So don't treat:

"ISO 800"

as a hard quality limit.


21. The Best ISO Rule

Instead of memorizing:

"Never go above ISO 800."

use this:

Use the lowest ISO that gives you correct exposure at your chosen shutter speed.

That's the more useful rule.


22. Auto ISO vs Manual ISO

For cinematic work:

Manual ISO

is preferable when lighting is predictable.

For rapidly changing conditions:

Auto ISO

can be more practical.

For example:

Flying from open sunlight into a forest

Auto ISO can prevent the footage from suddenly becoming dramatically underexposed.

But lock the ISO when consistency matters.


23. White Balance

This setting is often overlooked.

Don't let white balance wander during a cinematic flight.

Otherwise you can see:

warm → cool → warm

color shifts as the drone changes direction.

That looks amateur.


24. Recommended White Balance

Start with:

Sunny daylight

~5200–5600K

Cloudy

~6000–7000K

Golden hour

~6000–7000K

Then adjust based on the actual scene.

The key is:

Lock it.

Don't chase perfect Kelvin values.

Consistency is more important.


25. FOV

O4 Pro offers:

Standard

Wide-Angle

Ultra Wide-Angle

according to DJI. 

For cinematic FPV:

Wide-Angle

is our preferred starting point.

It gives you a strong immersive perspective without always going to the most extreme distortion.


26. Standard FOV

Use:

Standard

when you want a more controlled image.

This can work particularly well for:

  • Automotive tracking

  • Architectural flying

  • Smooth cinematic passes

  • Shots where distortion is distracting


27. Ultra-Wide

Use:

Ultra Wide-Angle

for:

  • Extreme proximity

  • Freestyle

  • Immersive FPV

  • Dramatic environmental shots

But be careful.

The wider the view, the more exaggerated:

speed

and:

edge distortion

can become.


28. Important Stabilization Limitation

DJI specifies that O4 Pro supports:

RockSteady 3.0+

and:

stabilization OFF for Gyroflow.

But when RockSteady is enabled, the shooting angle is limited to:

Standard

according to DJI. 

This is important.

If you want Wide or Ultra-Wide:

plan your stabilization workflow accordingly.


29. RockSteady or Gyroflow?

Want fast, simple footage?

RockSteady.

Want maximum control?

Gyroflow.

For professional MidronePro-style footage:

We prefer stabilization OFF + Gyroflow.

That gives you more control over the final look.

For a typical alpine FPV flight:

If you don't want to grade:

For aggressive freestyle:

The O4 Pro's maximum recording bitrate is 130 Mbps. 


34. Bitrate

You don't normally need to manually "choose" between multiple quality levels for the O4 Pro in the way you might on some cameras.

The hardware supports:

up to 130 Mbps

for recording. 

For maximum-quality footage:

use the highest available recording quality.


35. Recording vs Transmission

This distinction is critical.

Your:

recorded video

and:

live FPV transmission

are not the same thing.

You can record:

4K/120

while your goggles are receiving a separate digital transmission feed.

DJI specifies live-view transmission modes up to 1080p/100fps, while the onboard camera supports the much higher recording resolutions. 


36. Don't Confuse 4K/120 With 120 fps Transmission

This is a common misunderstanding.

4K/120

refers to:

onboard recording.

The low-latency FPV feed uses its own transmission settings.

For the lowest latency, DJI specifies:

1080p/100

in Racing Mode with compatible goggles. 


37. Storage

O4 Pro includes:

4 GB internal storage

and supports:

microSD up to 512 GB

For serious recording:

Use a fast, compatible V30 microSD card.

DJI's current recommended list includes several Lexar Professional 1066x and Kingston Canvas Go! Plus cards in capacities up to 512 GB. 


38. The 4 GB Safety Net

Don't think of the internal storage as your main recording drive.

Think of it as:

an emergency backup.

It's useful if:

you forgot your microSD card

or:

the card wasn't inserted correctly.

For serious shoots:

always use the microSD card.


39. Firmware First

Before chasing perfect settings:

Update the O4 Pro firmware.

DJI's official download center currently lists an O4 Air Unit Series user manual dated June 24, 2026, along with release notes. 

Settings and behavior can change with firmware.

So don't blindly copy a setup from an older tutorial.

as the 60 fps cinematic starting point.

ISO 100

whenever light allows.

Manual white balance

to prevent color shifts.

Wide-Angle

for immersive cinematic FPV.

Stabilization OFF + Gyroflow

for maximum post-production control.

RockSteady

when you want a fast, simple workflow.


One Important Correction for 2026

DJI's current documentation confirms that the O4 Pro's actual specification is 1/1.3-inch, 155° FOV, 4K/120, 130 Mbps, D-Log M and ISO up to 25,600. Its maximum rated transmission range is 15 km FCC with Goggles 3/N3, under DJI's controlled test conditions. 

We'll use these current official figures throughout the remaining parts, rather than relying on older O4 Pro specifications or early-launch information.

Part 1 focused on the recording camera.

Now we move to the other half of the O4 Pro experience:

the live FPV feed.

This is where settings can directly affect how the aircraft feels in the air.

For cinematic flying, you may prioritize image quality.

For freestyle and racing, you want:

low latency + stable transmission + predictable channels.

For long-range flying, you want:

link reliability + appropriate bandwidth + antenna positioning.

DJI's current specifications give the O4 Pro a maximum communication bandwidth of 60 MHz, two antennas using 2T2R, automatic and manual channel modes, and live-view options up to 1080p/100fps. With Goggles 3 in Racing Mode, DJI specifies minimum latency as low as 15 ms


1. The Best General Transmission Setting

For most pilots:

1080p/60

is an excellent starting point.

It provides a smooth, detailed live feed without requiring you to optimize specifically for racing.

If you're flying aggressively:

1080p/100

becomes more attractive.


2. Racing Mode

If latency is your priority:

Turn on Racing Mode.

DJI's Racing Mode locks the transmission to 1080p/100fps, switches channel selection to manual mode and is designed around racing-frequency compatibility. With Goggles 3, O4 Pro can achieve a specified minimum latency of 15 ms

With Goggles N3, DJI specifies a minimum of approximately 19 ms


3. When You Should NOT Use Racing Mode

Don't automatically enable Racing Mode for every flight.

If you're doing:

cinematic cruising

long-range exploration

casual freestyle

you may prefer a more flexible transmission configuration.

Racing Mode is specifically optimized for:

speed and low latency.


4. Best Racing Preset

For competitive or aggressive flying:

The O4 Pro's live transmission and onboard recording are separate systems, so you can fly using a low-latency 1080p feed while recording much higher-quality footage onboard.


5. 15 ms: What Does It Actually Mean?

DJI's 15 ms figure is a minimum latency measured under controlled conditions, not a guaranteed latency during every flight. 

Real latency can vary with:

  • Goggles

  • Transmission mode

  • RF environment

  • Distance

  • Interference

  • Processing conditions

So don't expect a permanent 15.0 ms readout.

The important point is:

O4 Pro has a very low-latency mode available.


6. Goggles 3

For maximum O4 Pro performance:

DJI Goggles 3

is our preferred choice.

DJI specifies the lowest O4 Pro Racing Mode latency with Goggles 3 at approximately 15 ms

It is therefore the natural choice for:

  • Racing

  • Aggressive freestyle

  • Proximity

  • High-speed flight


7. Goggles N3

The N3 is the more accessible option.

With O4 Pro and Racing Mode, DJI specifies approximately:

19 ms minimum latency

with N3. 

For many pilots, that difference from 15 ms won't matter.

So if:

comfort

price

or:

wearing glasses

is important, N3 can make considerable sense.

DJI specifically highlights N3's ability to accommodate personal glasses directly. 


8. Goggles 2 / Integra

O4 Pro also supports:

DJI Goggles 2

and:

DJI Goggles Integra.

With these goggles, DJI specifies O4 Pro transmission latency below 30 ms at 1080p/100. 

That's still perfectly usable for normal FPV.

But if you're specifically chasing the lowest latency:

Goggles 3 wins.


9. Automatic vs Manual Channel

For ordinary flying:

Auto

is the easiest choice.

The system can select an available channel automatically.

For organized racing:

Manual

is preferable.

You want predictable frequency allocation rather than allowing every aircraft to make independent decisions.


10. Racing Mode Automatically Changes This

DJI states that Racing Mode switches the channel mode to:

Manual.

This is important because racing requires controlled frequency allocation between aircraft. 

If several pilots are flying simultaneously:

don't simply let everyone pick channels randomly.

Assign them deliberately.


11. Bandwidth

O4 Pro supports communication bandwidth up to:

60 MHz

and offers:

60 MHz

40 MHz

20 MHz

10 MHz

depending on goggles and configuration. 

Bandwidth is one of the most misunderstood FPV settings.


12. 60 MHz

Use:

60 MHz

when you have a clean RF environment and want maximum transmission capacity.

It's particularly attractive for:

open-area cinematic flying

where interference isn't a major concern.

But wider bandwidth occupies more spectrum.


13. 40 MHz

This is an excellent middle ground.

For many pilots:

40 MHz

is the practical choice when you want strong image quality without using the maximum spectrum.

It's also relevant to Racing Mode configurations.


14. 20 MHz

20 MHz becomes more attractive when:

multiple pilots

are operating nearby,

or:

RF congestion

is significant.

You sacrifice some transmission capacity, but you gain greater channel separation and more options for frequency management.


15. 10 MHz

10 MHz is useful when spectrum efficiency is more important than maximum bandwidth.

It's particularly relevant to:

crowded RF environments

organized flying

certain long-range strategies

The correct choice depends heavily on local RF conditions.


16. Our Bandwidth Rule

Instead of memorizing one "best" bandwidth:

Clean environment

60 MHz

Moderate interference

40 MHz

Crowded environment

20 MHz

Very constrained RF environment

10 MHz

But treat this as a starting framework, not a universal formula.


17. The Long-Range Setup

For long-range flying, our priority changes.

Don't chase:

maximum bandwidth

at all costs.

Instead prioritize:

stable link

appropriate channel

antenna orientation

line of sight

battery endurance.

The aircraft's ability to return safely is more important than a few extra Mbps.


18. Long-Range Preset

19. Why Not Always Use 60 MHz?

Because the widest bandwidth isn't automatically the most robust option.

If you're flying around:

  • Wi-Fi congestion

  • Multiple FPV pilots

  • Urban environments

  • RF-heavy locations

you may benefit from narrowing the channel.

Think:

spectrum efficiency, not maximum numbers.


20. Transmission Power

DJI's O4 Pro supports different EIRP limits depending on frequency band and regulatory region. For example, DJI lists up to <33 dBm FCC at 5.8 GHz, while CE limits are lower.

The important rule:

Use only the transmission power permitted in your region.

Don't choose a setting based solely on the FCC maximum if you're flying somewhere with different regulatory limits.


21. Antenna Positioning

This is arguably more important than many software settings.

O4 Pro uses:

two antennas / 2T2R. 

Don't bury them inside carbon fiber.

Don't position both antennas directly against:

batteries

ESCs

carbon plates.

And don't allow them to be crushed or sharply bent.


22. Keep Antennas Clear

For the best link:

Keep antenna elements exposed.

Separate them from conductive materials.

Avoid carbon shielding.

Maintain sensible orientation.

Check them after every crash.

A perfect software configuration cannot compensate for a badly installed antenna.


23. Antenna Orientation During Flight

FPV aircraft constantly rotate.

That means the antennas should be installed so that the aircraft doesn't spend significant portions of the flight presenting a poor antenna orientation to the goggles.

For a typical 5-inch:

symmetric placement

is generally preferable.

The exact installation depends on the frame.


24. OSD

The O4 system can display flight-controller information when the FC supports Canvas Mode. DJI confirms that the O4 Air Unit Series supports adjustment of flight-controller parameters when the flight controller supports Canvas Mode.

For serious FPV:

Use OSD.

You want the most important flight information visible without taking your attention away from flying.

28. Link Quality

Don't wait until the video starts breaking up.

Monitor the link proactively.

If link quality begins deteriorating:

reduce distance

change orientation

move to better terrain

return home.

Good FPV pilots manage the link before it becomes an emergency.


29. The 15 km Problem

DJI rates O4 Pro at up to:

15 km FCC

with Goggles 3/N3 under unobstructed conditions without interference.

That number should never be interpreted as:

"I should fly 15 km away."

Actual flight range is limited by:

  • local regulations

  • visual line of sight

  • terrain

  • RF interference

  • battery

  • aircraft endurance

DJI explicitly notes that the actual maximum communication range during flight is limited by aircraft endurance.

The most important lesson is this:

There is no single "best" DJI O4 Pro setting.

A mountain sunset, a freestyle session, a race and a commercial automotive shoot place completely different demands on the camera and transmission system.

The O4 Pro gives you enough flexibility to build specific presets around each scenario. DJI officially supports 4K/120, 10-bit D-Log M, 130 Mbps recording, three FOV modes and RockSteady 3.0+ or stabilization-off recording for Gyroflow. 

So instead of constantly changing individual settings, we recommend creating a handful of repeatable presets.

3. Why 4K/60 Is Our Cinematic Sweet Spot

4K/60 provides an excellent balance between:

  • Light sensitivity

  • Slow-motion flexibility

  • Storage requirements

You can also slow 60 fps footage to 30 fps for:

2× slow motion.

For most cinematic FPV, that's enough.


4. Why 4:3?

FPV footage benefits from additional vertical information.

A 4:3 capture gives you more flexibility to:

  • Tight spaces

  • Dramatic dives

  • Extreme immersive shots

It exaggerates the sensation of speed.

That's exactly why it can be spectacular.


8. Cinematic FOV Warning

Ultra-wide isn't always better.

For a luxury automotive commercial, excessive edge distortion can make:

straight roads

and:

vehicle bodywork

look unnatural.

For those shots:

Wide-Angle or Standard

is usually safer.

The biggest mistake during sunset is leaving a strong ND filter installed as the light disappears.

14. Why 4K/30 Can Help at Night

At 30 fps, you have more flexibility with exposure time.

That can help preserve light.

If you're not planning slow motion:

4K/30 can be preferable after sunset.

The trade-off is less fluid motion.


15. When to Use 4K/60 at Night

Use 60 fps when:

  • The subject is moving quickly

  • You need smoother FPV motion

  • You want 2× slow motion

  • There is still enough available light

If the scene is becoming too dark:

drop to 30 fps before pushing ISO unnecessarily high.


16. Low-Light FOV

Use:

Standard or Wide-Angle

rather than automatically selecting Ultra Wide.

The wider the composition, the more scene information you're asking the sensor to handle.

For difficult exposure conditions, a more controlled FOV can make the image easier to manage.

Now forget cinematic grading.

Freestyle is about:
