Two Drones. One New Category.

For years, aerial filmmaking followed a familiar formula.

Point the camera.

Fly the drone.

Get the shot.

Then 360° cameras changed the equation.

Instead of deciding exactly where the camera should look before takeoff, you could capture the entire scene and decide where the shot was later.

That idea has now moved directly into the drone.

And, for the first time, DJI has entered a category that was created by a much younger rival.

The Antigravity A1 arrived as the first dedicated 360° drone, built around the idea of immersive capture and reframing after the flight. DJI followed with the Avata 360, bringing its FPV expertise, transmission technology and camera ecosystem into the same emerging category. Current comparisons describe these as the two dedicated 360° drones defining this new segment. 

This is therefore not another conventional DJI-versus-competitor comparison.

There is no Mavic-style camera drone on one side and an alternative Mavic on the other.

Instead, both manufacturers are asking a much more interesting question:

What if the drone captured everything?

And their answers are surprisingly different.


The New Drone War

The timing is significant.

Antigravity arrived first with the A1, introducing a drone designed around immersive 360° capture. The company itself positions the A1 as a 360° flying camera, while its official specifications list a 249g standard configuration and up to 24 minutes of flight time, with a high-capacity battery configuration extending quoted flight time to 39 minutes. 

Then DJI arrived.

The Avata 360 brings a substantially different proposition: DJI combines native 360° capture with the ability to fly in traditional FPV-style configurations and use both 360° and single-lens modes. DJI lists dual 1/1.1-inch sensors, 8K/60 HDR 360° video, 120MP 360° photos and O4+ transmission

Suddenly, creators have a choice.

Not between two ordinary drones.

Between two philosophies.


Antigravity's Philosophy: Capture Everything

The A1's concept is wonderfully simple.

You don't need to obsess over framing during the flight.

The drone captures the world around it.

Later, inside the editing workflow, you decide:

Look left.

Look right.

Look behind.

Look down.

Look up.

The original flight becomes almost like a digital master shot from which multiple compositions can be extracted.

That is the fundamental appeal of 360° aerial photography.

And it changes the relationship between pilot and camera.


DJI's Philosophy: Fly and Capture

DJI takes the concept further.

The Avata 360 isn't only a 360° camera with propellers.

Because it means the Avata 360 can be treated as:

If the Antigravity A1 says:

“Capture the entire world and choose the shot later.”

The DJI Avata 360 says:

“Capture the entire world—but keep the option to fly and shoot like an FPV drone.”

That distinction will become increasingly important throughout this comparison.


Design: Two Very Different Machines

At first glance, both drones belong to the same family.

Both are compact.

Both use four propellers.

Both are built around cameras that need an unobstructed view of the entire environment.

Both are designed for immersive aerial capture.

But their physical philosophies are different.

The Avata 360 is substantially heavier at around 455g, according to current published comparisons. 

That difference isn't trivial.

The A1's 249g Advantage

There is an immediate attraction to the A1.

Pick it up and it feels almost impossibly light for a drone capable of capturing spherical 8K footage.

That is the kind of product advantage you don't understand from a specification sheet.

You understand it when you're packing.

The A1 can occupy a much smaller place in a travel setup.

A lighter drone isn't automatically a better drone.

The Avata 360's integrated propeller guard immediately connects it visually to DJI's FPV/cinewhoop lineage.

That gives it a more substantial, protected appearance.

DJI specifically describes the integrated propeller guard as an additional layer of protection and pairs it with omnidirectional obstacle sensing in supported 360° operation. 

This matters because the Avata 360 isn't designed simply to float above a landscape.

It is designed to move through a scene.

A conventional camera drone encourages:

DJI says its Avata 360 uses two newly designed square CMOS sensors with optimized pixel arrangement, enabling native 8K 360° video from the dual-lens system. 

That architecture is central to the product.


8K Is Not the Real Story

It would be easy to make this article about:

8K vs 8K.

But that misses the point.

Both drones can capture 8K 360° video.

The real revolution is:

You don't have to decide where the camera is looking when you take the shot.

That's what changes everything.


The Shot You Didn't Know You Had

Imagine flying over a mountain ridge.

You think you're filming the valley ahead.

Later, you discover that the most interesting moment happened behind you:

A cloud opens.

The sun hits the ridge.

A hiker enters the frame.

A bird crosses the sky.

With a conventional drone:

You missed it.

With a 360° drone:

You may have captured it anyway.

That is the fundamental creative argument for both the A1 and Avata 360.


DJI's Imaging Hardware

DJI's Avata 360 uses two 1/1.1-inch CMOS sensors, with large 2.4μm pixels and an f/1.9 aperture.

DJI states up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range and 8K/60 360° HDR video. 

That is serious imaging hardware for a drone of this type.

The headline isn't simply 8K.

Antigravity's Imaging Approach

The A1 uses a 1/1.28-inch sensor system, with a maximum 8K/30 recording mode and up to 55MP still images according to current published specifications and testing. 

That puts the two systems surprisingly close in concept.

This may become the most important technical difference in the camera battle.

Why 60fps Matters More in a 360 Drone

360° footage is often reframed.

You aren't necessarily exporting the entire 360° sphere.

You may be extracting a conventional:

composition.

That means you're already throwing away part of the original image.

A higher frame rate gives you more flexibility when:

The still-image difference is even more dramatic.

DJI lists up to 120MP 360° photos.

Antigravity's A1 is listed at up to 55MP

But again, megapixels require context.

The Avata 360's 120MP panoramic still is created from the dual-camera capture system.

It is not equivalent to a conventional single-sensor 120MP photograph.

Still, for immersive landscapes and large reframes:

More captured information is valuable.


The Invisible Camera Concept

This is one of the most magical aspects of 360° drones.

When the two lenses stitch the environment together correctly, the drone can effectively disappear from the final composition.

Imagine arriving at a location.

That makes the Avata 360 unusually flexible.

A 360° camera

Antigravity's Minimalism

The A1's standard package centers around its Vision Goggles and Grip Motion Controller.

The experience is intentionally immersive.

Instead of looking down at a conventional screen and controlling a drone from a distance, the pilot effectively enters the camera's world.

That is a compelling concept.

And it makes the A1 feel more like a new type of flying camera than another conventional drone.

Part 2 — The 360° Camera War

Part 1 established the philosophical difference.

The Antigravity A1 is built around one beautifully simple idea:

Capture everything now. Decide what the shot was later.

The DJI Avata 360 takes that same idea and pushes it toward a more complete aerial imaging system.

It combines 360° capture with FPV flight, a conventional single-lens mode and DJI's broader camera and transmission ecosystem. DJI's official specifications give it dual 1/1.1-inch sensors, 8K/60 360° video, up to 120MP panoramic photographs and up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range.

The A1 answers with a 1/1.28-inch sensor, 8K/30, 5.2K/60, 4K/100 and 55MP photographs. 

On paper, DJI has the stronger camera.

But 360° imaging is different.

The question isn't simply:

Which camera has the better specification?

It's:

Why Sensor Size Matters Even More in 360°

A conventional drone camera can concentrate its imaging power on one direction.

You may take an enormous spherical file and ultimately use only a relatively small section of it.

That makes captured image quality extremely important.

The cleaner the original sphere:

the more freedom you have later.


8K vs 8K

This is where the comparison initially looks like a tie.

Both drones offer:

8K 360° video.

But the similarity ends there.

The Avata 360 records:

while the A1 reaches:

The A1 can, however, record 5.2K at up to 60fps and 4K at up to 100fps. 

That makes this less of a simple resolution battle and more of a resolution-versus-frame-rate battle.


8K/60 Changes the Character of the Avata

For slow, cinematic landscape movement, 8K/30 is perfectly respectable.

But FPV drones move differently.

They accelerate.

They bank.

They dive.

They fly close to subjects.

You can capture the motion at high frame rate and slow it down later.

So the A1 isn't a weak slow-motion platform.

The Resolution You Actually Deliver

Here's where the 8K headline becomes less important.

Most people aren't watching 8K 360° footage.

They are watching:

1080p Instagram

Vertical Shorts

That means the real advantage of 8K is not necessarily the final resolution.

It's the oversampling headroom.

You can crop the sphere.

You can change the virtual camera.

You can stabilize.

You can create a vertical composition.

Imagine the drone flies past a mountain cabin.

During the flight, you don't know whether the final edit will use:

That's the true value of high resolution.

“I can watch this in 8K.”

“I can make several different shots from one flight.”


DJI Has More Pixels to Work With

DJI's Avata 360 can capture panoramic stills at up to 120MP, compared with 55MP for the A1. 

That's a substantial difference.

Again, these are spherical/panoramic files rather than conventional 120MP and 55MP single-frame photographs.

But when the objective is:

Large landscapes

Detailed environments

Virtual-camera reframing

High-resolution still panoramas

the additional captured information is valuable.

The A1's 55MP Is Still Serious

55MP should not be dismissed.

A1 photographs are:

10496 × 5248

and can be saved in DNG as well as Antigravity's INSP format. 

That gives photographers useful post-processing flexibility.

For web publishing, social media and most digital uses:

55MP is already more than enough.

The DJI advantage becomes more relevant when you are aggressively cropping or working toward high-resolution output.


Dynamic Range

DJI specifies up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range for the Avata 360's imaging system. 

The A1's published specifications provide sensor, aperture and ISO information but do not state an equivalent dynamic-range figure on its official specifications page. 

That makes direct numerical comparison difficult.

But the Avata's larger sensors, f/1.9 aperture and DJI's stated dynamic-range performance give it the stronger specification-based position.

And in 360° photography, this matters.


Why Dynamic Range Is Critical in 360°

A 360° drone can face the sun while simultaneously recording:

Bright sky

Dark forest

Mountain shadows

Reflective water

Buildings

Clouds

all within the same spherical frame.

You cannot simply point the camera away from the sun.

The sun is part of the shot.

That's why dynamic range becomes particularly important.

Sunset Test

This is where I would expect the Avata 360 to separate itself most clearly.

Imagine a drone flying along a mountain ridge at sunset.

One side of the sphere contains:

Golden sunlight.

The opposite side contains:

Deep blue shadow.

A smaller sensor and slower lens have less room to preserve both.

DJI's larger dual sensors and f/1.9 aperture should give it more latitude.

That doesn't mean the A1 will produce poor footage.

Far from it.

It means:

The Avata gives the colorist more room before the image starts breaking apart.


Low Light

This is another important distinction.

The Avata 360's dual 1/1.1-inch sensors use 2.4μm pixels and an f/1.9 aperture, with DJI specifically highlighting improved low-light performance. 

The A1 uses a 1/1.28-inch sensor and f/2.2 lens. 

That gives DJI the hardware advantage.

At dusk:

Avata 360

More light.

Larger pixels.

Lower aperture number.

But There's Another Kind of Low Light

360° drones are not always used at night.

They are often used during:

And that is precisely where the Avata's imaging advantage becomes useful.


Color

The Avata 360 supports 10-bit D-Log M workflows, giving creators greater flexibility for color grading. DJI describes D-Log M as preserving more brightness and color information for post-production. 

The A1 records using H.264/H.265 at up to 170Mbps, with Standard and Slow Motion video modes listed in its official specifications. 

For a creator who wants to shoot:

Capture → export → publish

the difference may not matter much.

For:

Capture → grade → match cameras → master

it matters more.

The Professional Workflow

This is where the Avata begins looking less like a novelty and more like a genuine production camera.

A filmmaker can capture:

360° master

color grade

then:

create multiple aspect ratios

from the same source.

D-Log M gives the workflow additional latitude.

That matters when the footage needs to match other DJI cameras in a larger production.


The A1's Advantage: Simplicity

But Antigravity has deliberately kept the A1's workflow more focused.

Its native files use:

INSV

for video and

INSP

Stitching

This is one of the least glamorous specifications.

It may also be one of the most important.

Two cameras must become:

One spherical image.

If the stitching isn't convincing, the entire illusion collapses.

You can get:

Visible seams

Perspective mismatches

Objects bending

Exposure differences

Ghosting

The closer the subject is to the drone, the more demanding the stitching becomes.


Why the Drone Itself Can Be Difficult to Stitch

Imagine a tree branch passing very close to one lens.

The other lens sees it from a different angle.

The software has to reconcile those two perspectives.

A car

A wall

A moving cyclist

directly beside the aircraft.

The closer the subject:

the harder the stitching problem.

This is one of the reasons 360° drone footage should be evaluated by real-world seam behavior, not just resolution.


DJI's Virtual Gimbal

The Avata 360 introduces another major imaging advantage.

DJI calls the system a 360° Virtual Gimbal, allowing the creator to manipulate the viewing direction independently of the drone's physical movement. DJI also lists infinite rotation and tilt control. 

This is a major part of the camera's creative identity.

The drone can:

Fly one direction.

While the virtual camera:

Looks somewhere completely different.


That's More Than Stabilization

A conventional gimbal stabilizes the camera.

A 360° virtual gimbal changes the concept entirely.

The camera doesn't have to physically point toward the subject.

The subject can be selected afterward.

This means the pilot can focus on:

Flight path

Speed

Distance

Altitude

while the editor controls the visual composition later.


The A1 Plays the Same Game

The A1's entire imaging philosophy also revolves around this concept.

But DJI's Avata 360 adds another layer:

FPV flight.

That means the same drone can be used to capture a 360° master and then switch to conventional single-lens FPV footage.

The A1 is more purely 360°.

The DJI is more hybrid.


Single-Lens Mode Changes the Comparison

This is arguably the most important camera feature outside 360° capture.
