There is a moment in every drone generation when the specifications stop telling the whole story.

The numbers become impressive enough that the real question changes.

Not:

Which drone has more features?

But:

What kind of aerial camera do you actually want to own?

The DJI Mavic 4 Pro sits at the top of DJI's current consumer camera-drone hierarchy. Its formula is unapologetically ambitious: a 4/3 Hasselblad main camera, two telephoto cameras, the rotating Infinity Gimbal, up to 51 minutes of flight time and DJI's O4+ transmission system. 

The DJI Air 3S takes a different approach.

It combines a 1-inch 50MP wide-angle camera with a 1/1.3-inch 48MP 70mm-equivalent medium-tele camera, while keeping the aircraft considerably lighter and more accessible than the Mavic 4 Pro. DJI rates it for up to 45 minutes of flight time.

On paper, the Mavic 4 Pro should win.

But that isn't the story we want to tell.

Because the Air 3S is one of the most capable drones in DJI's lineup, and for many creators, the question isn't whether the Mavic 4 Pro is better.

It is:

Is it better enough to justify carrying it, learning it and paying considerably more for it?

A 360° rotating Infinity Gimbal.

The gimbal can rotate through 360° and provide up to 70° upward shooting, opening camera movements that conventional drone gimbals cannot reproduce in the same way. 

This is where the Mavic 4 Pro begins to feel less like a traditional camera drone.

Its primary camera uses a 1-inch 50MP sensor, while the second camera uses a 1/1.3-inch 48MP sensor with a 70mm-equivalent focal length

The Mavic 4 Pro weighs approximately 1,063 g.

The Air 3S weighs 724 g

That's a difference of roughly 339 grams before you even consider batteries, accessories or the rest of the shooting kit.

Neither drone is a “small” drone in the way the Mini 5 Pro is.

But their size still affects how you travel with them.

The Air 3S is the easier proposition when you're trying to keep a kit relatively compact.

That's too simplistic.

The Air 3S is already a serious camera drone.

DJI rates it for up to 45 minutes of flight time, 12 m/s wind resistance and C1 classification in the EU. It also features omnidirectional sensing supplemented by forward-facing LiDAR. 

The Mavic 4 Pro moves further up the ladder, with up to 51 minutes of quoted flight time, 12 m/s wind resistance, C2 classification in the EU and 0.1-lux Nightscape omnidirectional obstacle sensing. 

So the distinction isn't:

Professional vs amateur.

It's closer to:

Advanced aerial camera vs flagship aerial camera system.

And that is a much more interesting comparison.


The Weight of the Flagship

There is something psychologically interesting about the Mavic 4 Pro.

At around a kilogram, it announces that it is serious equipment.

You don't casually throw it into a small daypack.

You plan around it.

You think about batteries.

You think about the controller.

You think about the location.

You think about the shot list.

The Air 3S still requires preparation, but its lower weight makes it easier to integrate into a broader travel kit.

That makes it particularly attractive to creators who want:

one camera

one drone

one compact kit

and the ability to move quickly.

In practice, the difference is more complicated.

Maximum flight-time figures are controlled test measurements. Actual endurance changes with:

  • Flight speed

  • Battery condition

So we wouldn't treat six minutes as a decisive reason to buy the Mavic.

The more interesting point is that the larger, heavier flagship also manages to offer longer quoted endurance.

That's impressive.


Transmission: Another Mavic Advantage

The Mavic 4 Pro uses DJI O4+, with a claimed maximum transmission distance of up to 30 km under specified FCC conditions. DJI lists 15 km for CE/SRRC/MIC conditions. 

The Air 3S uses O4 and is rated up to 20 km FCC and 10 km under CE/SRRC/MIC conditions. 

But once again, these are maximum transmission figures under controlled conditions.

They should never be interpreted as a recommendation to fly beyond visual line of sight or beyond local legal limits.

In a real city, forest or mountainous environment, terrain and interference can dramatically reduce usable range. DJI's own Air 3S figures show how much performance can change in obstructed or interference-heavy conditions. 

The Mavic has the technical advantage.

The Air 3S is already more than capable for normal operations.


The First Big Question

After the opening comparison, the Mavic 4 Pro has already established a formidable lead on paper.

It offers:

Because drones aren't ultimately judged by how impressive their specification sheets look.

The Mavic 4 Pro's primary camera is built around a 4/3 CMOS Hasselblad sensor, with a 100MP effective resolution and a 28mm-equivalent lens with a variable f/2.0–f/11 aperture. DJI claims up to 15.5 stops of dynamic range under its specified testing conditions. 

The Air 3S uses a 1-inch 50MP CMOS primary camera, with a 24mm-equivalent f/1.8 lens. 

Both are serious cameras.

But the Mavic's larger sensor gives it an important physical advantage.

A 4/3 sensor is substantially larger than a 1-inch sensor.

That gives DJI more room to work with:

Tonal transitions

Highlight retention

High-resolution detail

And in difficult light, these differences can become much more visible than the headline megapixel count suggests.

The Mavic 4 Pro's 100MP specification looks almost absurd next to the Air 3S's 50MP.

This is a surprisingly interesting difference.

The Air 3S's primary camera is approximately 24mm equivalent.

Most viewers will never watch your footage at native 6K.

The practical difference becomes most relevant in scenes like:

When the sky is dramatically brighter than the ground, dynamic range becomes one of the most valuable properties of the camera.

The Mavic has more headroom.

The Air 3S is simpler.

How well can the cameras match each other?

The Mavic's three-camera system gives you a much broader native perspective range, but professional users will still want to maintain consistent exposure, white balance and color treatment when switching cameras.

The Mavic 4 Pro has the stronger camera system.

But a camera drone isn't judged while sitting on a table.

The Mavic 4 Pro weighs approximately 1,063 g.

The Air 3S weighs 724 g

That difference is substantial.

But weight isn't simply a portability disadvantage.

It also contributes to the character of the aircraft in the air.

The Mavic feels like a serious production platform.

And when you're shooting in a landscape where conditions are changing, that can be reassuring.

Mountain turbulence, gusts around buildings and rapidly changing coastal conditions can behave very differently from a steady wind in a controlled test.

Smaller and lighter, but still rated for the same 12 m/s maximum wind resistance.

Neither should be treated as a drone you simply send into increasingly strong wind because the specification says 12 m/s.

Flight Time: 51 Minutes vs 45 Minutes

The Mavic 4 Pro is rated for up to 51 minutes of flight time.

The Air 3S is rated for up to 45 minutes

That gives the Mavic a six-minute advantage on paper.

It sounds meaningful.

In practice, it isn't as dramatic as the numbers suggest.

These are controlled test figures.

DJI measures maximum flight time under specific conditions, including controlled windless environments and defined flight behavior. Actual flight time varies with wind, temperature, flight speed, usage and other conditions. (DJI Official)

And you don't actually have 51 or 45 minutes of usable filming time.

You need:

Takeoff

Positioning

Composition

Shot repetitions

Return margin

Landing reserve

So the more useful conclusion is:

Mavic 4 Pro has the endurance advantage.

But:

Air 3S already has excellent endurance.

For most short shooting sessions, the six-minute difference won't determine the quality of the final film.

For long commercial shoots, scouting and repeated takes, it can become valuable.


The Mavic Is Better for Long Production Days

Imagine a professional location shoot.

The sun is moving.

The Mavic 4 Pro uses DJI O4+, with DJI quoting up to 30 km transmission under FCC conditions in an unobstructed, interference-free environment. Under CE/SRRC/MIC conditions, DJI lists up to 15 km. (DJI Official)

The Air 3S uses DJI O4, with a quoted maximum of 20 km FCC and 10 km under CE/SRRC/MIC conditions. 

But these numbers require context.

They are maximum laboratory-style transmission figures.

They are not permission to fly those distances.

And they don't represent what you'll necessarily experience in:

Cities

Forests

Mountains

Dense suburbs

Electromagnetically noisy environments

DJI's own testing shows significantly reduced ranges when interference or physical obstruction is introduced. 


What O4+ Actually Means for a Creator

The interesting advantage isn't simply range.

O4+ is about the overall quality and robustness of the connection.

The Mavic 4 Pro supports 10-bit HDR video transmission, with DJI also highlighting stronger anti-interference performance.

For professional work, a strong live feed matters.

You're trying to judge:

Focus

Framing

Highlights

Subject position

Movement

Obstacle clearance

A better transmission system reduces uncertainty.

The Air 3S's O4 system is already highly capable.

But this is another area where the Mavic's flagship status is justified.

Winner: Mavic 4 Pro.


Obstacle Sensing: Both Are Sophisticated

The Air 3S already introduced an important feature to the Air family:

forward-facing LiDAR combined with omnidirectional binocular vision and an infrared sensor. 

The Mavic 4 Pro takes the concept further.

But we need to make one distinction very clear.

Obstacle sensing is an assistance system.

It is not a substitute for responsible piloting.


Night Flying: Mavic Moves Ahead

This is one of the clearest operational differences.

DJI says the Mavic 4 Pro's nightscape omnidirectional sensing can operate at illumination levels down to 0.1 lux, subject to the sensor's environmental requirements. 

The Air 3S also has nightscape obstacle sensing, but DJI specifies operating conditions above 1 lux for its relevant vision-based sensing system. Its forward-facing LiDAR can operate at night within its specified sensing range. 

That gives the Mavic a meaningful edge in extremely low-light environments.

And this pairs naturally with its larger 4/3 Hasselblad camera.

The aircraft is essentially saying:

If you want to shoot when the sun is gone, I'm designed for that.


Smart RTH Becomes More Important as the Drone Gets More Capable

The more expensive and capable the aircraft becomes, the more important its recovery systems are.

The Mavic 4 Pro introduces a next-generation Smart Return to Home system, with DJI describing the ability to detect obstacles along flight and return paths and, under supported conditions, remember flight paths for quicker takeoffs and safer returns even without satellite signals.

The Air 3S also features advanced Smart RTH capabilities. 

Again, the important word is:

Supported conditions.

No autonomous system should be treated as infallible.

A pilot still needs to understand:
