Master the Light Before You Touch ISO

There is a brief moment during an FPV flight when the entire landscape changes character.

The warm edge of sunset begins to disappear. Mountain ridges become silhouettes. Roads turn into ribbons of light. City windows begin to glow, while the sky moves from gold to violet and finally into deep blue.

This is where low-light FPV becomes less about having the newest camera and more about knowing when to change your settings.

The DJI O4 Air Unit Pro gives pilots a strong foundation. Its 1/1.3-inch sensor, f/2.8 lens, ISO 100–25,600 range, 4K recording up to 120fps and 10-bit D-Log M provide considerable flexibility as available light falls. DJI also supports RockSteady 3.0+ and a stabilization-off workflow for Gyroflow.

But the O4 Pro cannot make poor exposure decisions disappear.

The real skill is knowing when to change frame rate, shutter, ND filtration and ISO—and understanding how those decisions interact with the way you fly.

The O4 Pro Advantage

The O4 Air Unit Pro's 1/1.3-inch sensor is one of the key reasons it is particularly interesting for cinematic FPV.

DJI specifies a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor, f/2.8 aperture, ISO 100–25,600, 4K recording up to 120fps and 10-bit D-Log M. The system also offers a 155° field of view and support for RockSteady 3.0+.

Those specifications give creators more flexibility.

They do not change the fundamental physics of photography.

As light disappears, fewer photons reach the sensor. You therefore have to decide which compromise is most appropriate:

slower shutter, higher ISO, lower frame rate—or some combination of all three.

The best setting is the one that preserves the character of the shot.


The Three Stages of Low-Light FPV

Low light isn't a single shooting condition.

For practical FPV work, MidronePro divides the transition into three stages.

01 — Golden Hour

Golden hour is still relatively generous.

The sun is low, shadows are long and the landscape can have extraordinary contrast. The challenge isn't necessarily getting enough exposure—it is controlling the available light while maintaining the motion characteristics you want.

This is where ND filtration can still be extremely useful.

Golden-hour priorities

  • Control highlights

  • Maintain natural motion blur

  • Use the appropriate ND filter

  • Keep white balance consistent

  • Avoid unnecessary Auto exposure changes

Don't remove your ND simply because you're preparing for night.

If the scene is still bright enough to require filtration, removing it too early may force your shutter speed unnecessarily high.


02 — Blue Hour

Then the character of the image changes.

The sun disappears below the horizon, but the sky still provides significant ambient illumination.

This is often the most beautiful stage for cinematic FPV.

A mountain ridge can remain visible against a deep-blue sky while roads, buildings and vehicles begin creating warm points of light.

The O4 Pro now has to deal with a much wider contrast relationship.

Blue-hour priorities

Remove ND when available light requires it.

Keep ISO controlled.

Protect artificial highlights.

Use manual white balance.

Avoid excessive shadow recovery.

Blue hour can also disappear surprisingly quickly.

A setting that looked perfect ten minutes earlier may leave you noticeably underexposed after the next battery change.


03 — Night

Once ambient light becomes genuinely limited, the exposure strategy changes again.

Artificial lights can become extremely bright relative to the surrounding environment.

A streetlight, building or vehicle headlight may be several stops brighter than the landscape around it.

That creates the classic night-FPV problem:

deep shadows + bright highlights + limited available light.

The answer isn't simply to increase ISO.

Instead, evaluate the entire exposure chain:

Frame rate → shutter → ND → ISO

That order gives you more control over the final image.


ISO: Don't Chase the Number

The O4 Pro's official ISO range extends to 25,600.

That's useful flexibility, but it shouldn't be interpreted as a target.

For cinematic work, ISO should generally be the final exposure adjustment, not the first one.

These are starting points rather than universal presets.

An illuminated city can require considerably less ISO than a completely dark mountain valley.

The principle is more important than the number:

Use the lowest ISO that gives you a properly exposed image without forcing an unnecessarily slow shutter.

Severely underexposing an ISO 400 image and attempting to recover it later can produce more visible noise than correctly exposing an ISO 800 image in the first place.


Shutter Speed: Protect the Motion

FPV makes shutter speed particularly important because the camera is constantly moving.

A useful cinematic starting point is the traditional 180-degree shutter principle:

These aren't rules.

A fast proximity flight may benefit from a faster shutter to preserve detail.

A slow cinematic mountain reveal may benefit from more natural motion blur.

The important thing is to make the choice deliberately.

When the light begins to disappear, ask:

Do I still need the ND?

Then:

Do I really need this frame rate?

Then:

Can I accept a moderate increase in ISO?

Only after those questions should you start using shutter speed aggressively as an exposure control.


4K/30: The Low-Light Workhorse

The O4 Pro supports multiple 4K frame rates, including 24/25/30/48/50/60/100/120fps depending on recording mode.

But higher frame rates aren't automatically better once the light begins to disappear.

4K/30

For many low-light cinematic flights, 4K/30 is the most practical starting point.

It offers a strong balance between:

  • Exposure

  • Motion rendering

  • Resolution

  • Post-production flexibility

It's particularly well suited to:

Sunset landscapes
Blue-hour flights
City night sequences
Slow cinematic cruising

4K/60

Use 4K/60 when the movement genuinely benefits from it.

It's particularly useful for:

Automotive tracking
Fast FPV movement
Dynamic proximity flying
Moderate slow motion

But remember that a natural shutter at 60fps generally requires twice the shutter speed of 30fps, reducing exposure time.

4K/120

4K/120 is an impressive capability, but it shouldn't automatically become your low-light setting.

At 120fps, a natural shutter around 1/240 gives the sensor considerably less exposure time per frame.

In genuinely dark conditions, that can force ISO substantially higher.

The ND Filter Exit Strategy

ND filters are designed to reduce incoming light.

That's exactly what you want when bright conditions make it difficult to maintain a cinematic shutter speed.

As the sun disappears, however, the same filter can become a liability.

Golden hour

ND may remain useful.

Late golden hour

Start evaluating the scene without it.

Blue hour

Remove ND when available light becomes limiting.

Night

Usually fly without ND.

DJI confirms that the O4 Air Unit Pro is compatible with the ND filter system used by DJI Avata 2.

The important part isn't owning an ND set.

It's knowing when to stop using it.

D-Log M: Preserve the Atmosphere

The O4 Pro supports 10-bit D-Log M, giving creators greater flexibility during post-production.

This becomes especially useful around sunset, where one frame can contain:

  • A bright sky

  • Deep mountain shadows

  • Warm artificial lights

  • Reflections

  • Dark foreground detail

But D-Log M doesn't create information that wasn't captured.

If you severely underexpose the recording and then aggressively lift the shadows, you can reveal noise along with the detail.

For low-light D-Log M:

Expose deliberately.

Protect important highlights.

Avoid unnecessary underexposure.

Grade shadows with restraint.

DJI provides an official D-Log M to Rec.709 LUT for the O4 Air Unit series as a starting point for grading.


White Balance: Keep the Color Consistent

Low-light scenes often contain several different light sources.

Warm streetlights.

Cool LEDs.

Blue ambient sky.

Vehicle headlights.

Building interiors.

Auto White Balance can react to these changes during a flight, causing visible color shifts between shots—or even during one continuous sequence.

For planned cinematic work, manual white balance is usually the better choice.

There isn't one universal Kelvin setting for every environment.

Consistency is the objective.


The Pilot Is Part of the Camera

Technical settings are only half the equation.

The other half is how you fly.

Low light makes aggressive movement more obvious.

Rapid yaw.

Hard throttle transitions.

Sudden direction changes.

Close-proximity flying.

All can increase the visual impact of motion blur and noise.

For cinematic low-light footage:

Smooth your throttle.

Make yaw movements deliberate.

Avoid unnecessary corrections.

Give the camera time to see into darker areas.

Use existing lights as part of the composition.

A smoother flight can sometimes improve the final image more than another stop of ISO.

Don't Try to Make Night Look Like Day

This is the most important lesson in low-light FPV.

Night should look like night.

A mountain ridge can become a silhouette.

A road can disappear into darkness.

A city can be defined almost entirely by its lights.

The darkness isn't the problem.

Uncontrolled darkness is.

Your job is to decide how much of it the viewer should see.

Part 2 — Real-World Settings for Sunset, Blue Hour & Night FPV

Knowing the theory is one thing.

Applying it when the sun is disappearing behind a mountain, a car is moving through a dark road or a city suddenly fills the frame with artificial light is another.

The DJI O4 Pro gives you the flexibility to adapt, but low-light shooting becomes much easier when you arrive with a starting configuration rather than improvising every setting in the air.

01 — Sunset FPV: Keep the Highlights Under Control

Sunset can look spectacular through an FPV camera.

It can also destroy your exposure surprisingly quickly.

The sun itself may be outside the frame while the sky remains considerably brighter than the foreground. Mountains, buildings and trees can therefore become dramatically darker while the horizon remains extremely bright.

This is where the ND filter still has an important role.

These are starting points, not fixed prescriptions.

If you're shooting directly toward the setting sun, protecting highlights becomes more important than maintaining a specific ISO number.


The Sunset Trap

One of the easiest mistakes is exposing for the landscape while ignoring the sky.

The result can look impressive on the goggles because the foreground appears bright enough.

Then you review the footage and discover that the sky has become a large, featureless patch of white.

For cinematic sunset footage, we'd rather accept a darker foreground than completely destroy the brightest part of the scene.

The O4 Pro's wide field of view makes this especially relevant because the frame can contain a large amount of sky.

02 — Late Golden Hour: Start Preparing for Blue Hour

This is the transition most pilots underestimate.

The light may still look beautiful, but it is falling quickly.

You should already be thinking about your next setup.

If you're using an ND filter, check whether you still need it.

If you're shooting 4K/60 simply because you planned to use slow motion, consider whether 4K/30 would now give you a cleaner result.

If Auto White Balance is active, consider locking it before the sequence changes dramatically.

The best time to make these decisions is before the scene becomes difficult.


03 — Blue Hour: The O4 Pro Sweet Spot

Blue hour is where the visual character of low-light FPV really changes.

The landscape is darker, but the sky can still provide a beautiful amount of ambient light.

At the same time, artificial lights begin to become prominent.

This gives you an unusual combination:

deep blue sky

warm highlights

dark terrain

controlled reflections

long atmospheric gradients

For many cinematic creators, this is the most rewarding low-light period.

A brightly illuminated city may remain comfortable at ISO 400–800.

A dark mountain environment may quickly require ISO 1,600 or more.

The important thing is not to force the same ISO across both situations.


Blue Hour and Artificial Light

Blue hour brings together cool ambient light, warm artificial highlights and deep cinematic shadows.

Artificial light is where blue-hour footage can become particularly cinematic.

Streetlights and windows can become warm visual anchors against a cooler sky.

But they're also potential clipping points.

Don't automatically brighten the entire image simply because the landscape is getting darker.

Instead, look at the composition.

If a road illuminated by headlights is the subject, you may want the surrounding landscape to fall deeper into shadow.

Exposure should follow the story of the shot.


04 — City Night: Protect the Lights

Once you're flying through a city at night, the problem becomes contrast.

A modern city can contain extremely bright light sources surrounded by almost complete darkness.

Think about:

  • Streetlights

  • Vehicle headlights

  • Neon signs

  • Building windows

  • Bridges

  • Reflective glass

  • Wet roads

The O4 Pro can capture a dramatic scene, but you need to resist the temptation to expose purely for the shadows.

From there, adjust according to the scene.


Night Doesn't Mean Maximum ISO

This deserves emphasis.

A brightly illuminated city at night can sometimes be easier to expose than a dark rural landscape.

If you're surrounded by lights, ISO 1,600 may be unnecessarily high.

If you're flying over an unlit valley, ISO 1,600 might not be enough.

That's why “best night ISO” isn't a useful universal answer.

Instead:

Judge the amount and direction of available light before choosing your ISO.


05 — Automotive Tracking at Blue Hour

Automotive FPV creates a different problem.

Now the subject is moving.

The drone is moving.

And the environment is changing rapidly.

That makes shutter speed more important.

For a controlled automotive sequence, a good starting point is:

4K/60

1/120

ISO 400–1,600

D-Log M

Manual white balance

ND according to available light

The exact setup should change as daylight disappears.


Why 4K/60 Can Make Sense Here

At 30fps, 1/60 may provide beautiful motion blur.

But when the drone is flying quickly alongside a vehicle, excessive blur can reduce the clarity of the road, wheels and surrounding environment.

Moving to 60fps and approximately 1/120 gives you more temporal resolution and can provide a cleaner rendering of rapid movement.

The trade-off is exposure.

You are asking the camera to capture each frame in less time.

If the light is falling, ISO may need to rise.

This is where the O4 Pro's larger sensor and broad ISO range become useful.


06 — Alpine Dusk

Mountain environments are particularly difficult because the available light can disappear much faster than expected.

A valley may already be in deep shadow while the peaks are still illuminated.

That can create a huge exposure difference inside a single frame.

The key is to decide what part of the landscape is the subject.

If the mountain ridge is the hero, expose around it.

If you're following a road through the valley, preserve the road and let the surrounding terrain become darker.


The Alpine Shadow Problem

One of the worst approaches is trying to make every part of the mountain visible.

That can lead to an over-bright image with noisy shadows and clipped highlights.

Instead, embrace the natural contrast.

A dark foreground can make an illuminated ridge look more dramatic.

A silhouette can give scale to a landscape.

Low-light cinematography is often about what you choose not to reveal.

07 — Forest and Shaded Environments

Forests create a particularly difficult low-light environment because the camera may see bright sky through the trees while the ground is already extremely dark.

This is a recipe for high contrast.

You also have another problem:

movement.

Leaves, branches and shadows move rapidly across the frame as the drone passes through the environment.

For this type of flight, maintaining enough shutter speed to preserve detail can be more important than chasing the lowest possible ISO.

If you're flying quickly through dense vegetation, 4K/60 can be worth the exposure trade-off.

If you're making a slower cinematic pass, 4K/30 is usually the better starting point.


08 — Fast Proximity FPV at Dusk

This is where the priorities change again.

If you're flying close to:

  • Trees

  • Buildings

  • Rocks

  • Bridges

  • Walls

  • Vehicles

you need enough shutter speed to preserve the detail that defines the flight.

In this situation, a slightly noisier image can be preferable to excessive motion blur.

Then adjust ISO according to the actual environment.

This is one situation where the O4 Pro's ability to work at higher ISO values can become useful.


The Low-Light Decision Tree

When the light changes during a flight, don't randomly change settings.

Use a sequence.

STEP 1 — Check the ND

Is it still necessary?

If not, remove it.

STEP 2 — Check the frame rate

Do you actually need 60fps or 120fps?

If not, 30fps may give you more exposure flexibility.

STEP 3 — Protect your shutter

Maintain the shutter speed appropriate for the movement you're capturing.

STEP 4 — Increase ISO

Only now use ISO to compensate for the remaining loss of light.

STEP 5 — Reassess the highlights

Artificial lights may now be clipping even though the overall image appears dark.

This last step is crucial.

A night image can look too dark on the goggles while still containing completely blown-out highlights.

The One Setting You Shouldn't Change Constantly

White balance.

If you're capturing a cinematic sequence across multiple passes, constant white-balance changes can make editing unnecessarily difficult.

A warm sunset shot followed by a cool blue-hour shot is natural.

A single continuous flight that suddenly shifts from warm to cool because Auto White Balance reacted to a streetlight is not.

For planned work:

Choose your white balance.

Lock it.

Keep it consistent.


When to Abandon the Cinematic Shutter Rule

The 180-degree shutter principle is useful.

It is not sacred.

There are situations where preserving motion detail matters more.

Fast automotive tracking.

High-speed proximity.

Dense forests.

Tight canyon flying.

If motion blur becomes so strong that the environment loses definition, increasing shutter speed can be the better creative decision.

The O4 Pro gives you enough flexibility to make that choice.

The important thing is understanding the trade-off:

faster shutter = cleaner motion detail, less light

slower shutter = more light, more motion blur

Neither is automatically correct.

Part 3 — The Professional Low-Light Workflow

The right settings get you into the air.

The right workflow is what gets you footage worth keeping.

By the time an FPV flight reaches blue hour or night, the camera is only one part of the equation. Exposure monitoring, stabilization, white balance, flight technique and post-production all begin to influence the final image.

This is where the O4 Pro becomes more than a specification sheet.

Don't Judge Low-Light Footage From One Number

ISO is useful.

So is shutter speed.

But neither tells you whether your image is actually good.

A professional low-light workflow looks at the whole frame.

Ask yourself:

Are the important highlights protected?

Is the subject visible?

Is the motion appropriate for the shot?

Are the shadows noisy or intentionally dark?

Is the color consistent?

Will the footage survive the grade?

That last question matters.

An image can look acceptable on a bright FPV monitor and become problematic when you start pushing contrast, recovering shadows or matching it with other shots.


Exposure: Protect the Story, Not Every Pixel

Low-light cinematography is inherently about contrast.

You don't need every shadow to contain visible detail.

You need the important detail to survive.

Imagine an alpine road at blue hour.

The road is illuminated by headlights.

The mountain behind it is almost black.

Trying to make the mountain as bright as the road would destroy the mood of the shot.

Instead, let the mountain remain dark.

The road becomes the visual anchor.

This is the difference between correct exposure and story-driven exposure.

Using the Histogram More Intelligently

The histogram is useful, but it shouldn't become a target that you try to center perfectly.

A night scene will naturally have more information toward the darker side of the histogram.

That's normal.

What you want to watch are the extremes.

Watch the highlights

Artificial lights can clip surprisingly quickly.

Streetlights, headlights, illuminated signs and windows may be much brighter than the surrounding scene.

Watch the shadows

If the entire lower portion of the image is crushed into featureless black, you may have gone too far.

But don't assume every dark area needs to be lifted.

Watch the overall shape

A night image with a histogram weighted heavily toward the shadows can still be beautifully exposed.

The histogram describes the image.

It doesn't decide the image.


D-Log M: The Professional Workflow

But the workflow should begin before the footage reaches the editing timeline.

Capture

Expose consistently.

Avoid unnecessary underexposure.

This makes color matching much easier later.

Normalize

Use a suitable D-Log M to Rec.709 conversion or LUT as a starting point rather than immediately applying aggressive creative grades.
